Getting Experience by Giving Back
One of the best parts of my experience as a summer associate at Weil has been the level of involvement in pro bono matters that I’ve gotten to do throughout the summer. Weil attorneys have ample opportunity to give back to the community through various pro bono matters and the firm truly encourages it. Throughout my summer, I’ve had the opportunity to work on various pro bono matters with both junior associates and partners. I was able to attend an oral argument in a courthouse for one of the pro bono matters I was working on, which was one of the highlights of my summer. Some of the most valuable learning experiences for summer associates and junior associates happen during pro bono matters because partners encourage a hands-on approach and often let the junior associates take the wheel. Weil values giving hands-on training and pro bono is the perfect way to both get connected with the community and gain valuable experience at the same time.
Further, Weil offers summer associates the opportunity to take part in a two week pro bono externship at various organizations throughout the city. I did my externship at a public television station in New York City. I was able to learn a lot about what the nonprofit does and get hands-on experience working at a nonprofit. I think the pro bono externship option that Weil offers is a great example of how much emphasis the firm puts on giving back to the community through pro bono and is one of the many reasons I’m glad I chose to become a summer associate at Weil.
